But after waiting nearly an hour, she reluctantly gave up on her mysterious suspect appearing. She wondered if he’d forgotten their meeting or if he never intended to come at all. Of course, there was always the possibility he became entrenched in some criminal activity that required his attention. Now she was even happier that Hugh went after Jackson and Fintan as her meeting turned out to be a dead end.

She would take the opportunity to enjoy a brisk walk home to Erie Street. As she strolled, she noticed familiar faces up ahead.

The two ladies were unmistakable, not just because of their beauty, but to her, they stood out because they hid their attractiveness as best as possible. Although they wore expensive looking silk gowns, muted gray and brown colors were hardly what one would wear in summer. Also, both Rebecca and Nina’s coiffures were plainly done, with no accouterments of any kind added for beautification. Nina’s brother was also with them, tailored neatly in day jacket and trousers of gray.

She picked up her pace in an attempt to reach them before they turned down the next block. However, Nina abruptly stopped. Madeline saw Miss Nina motion to Rebecca. Nina pointed to a nearby bench, and Madeline assumed she wished her to sit there.

Madeline walked on for a few feet more, concealing her face as best she could with her parasol. She stopped, pretending to look in a shop window. Standing in a doorway that concealed them as best as it could, were Jackson and Nina. Both their heads were down, and she was listening as he looked beseechingly at her. Madeline could not hear what he was saying, but he was speaking rapidly.

She was startled at seeing these two people together, and in such an intimate way. Rebecca’s brother stood a short distance away intently watching them, but Rebecca had her back turned toward the couple, as if allowing them their privacy. Madeline then decided to change strategies and took the opportunity to come up behind Rebecca.

“Miss Rebecca, I’m sorry to trouble you. I heard what you said to leave you and Miss Lawrence alone, but I feel I must speak. I think the two of you might be in danger.”

She strangely stared at her, almost a dead stare. Madeline could not discern what her thoughts might be about what she just told her.

Rebecca responded curtly, “We are aware of that, it is why we asked you not to dabble into affairs which are of no concern to you.

“But tell me why you feel this way?”

She then explained why Miss Sweet had employed her.

She said, “Perhaps Miss Lawrence is unaware that she might have vital information that will lead to the murderer.

“Were any of you in the park the night Mr. Emmett Matthews died?”

“If we were, why would that make a difference?”

“Because the killer may have thought you saw or heard something that might identify them?”

She answered, deliberately emphasizing particular words that denied their involvement.

“You are right, Miss Donovan. We were in the park that night, but I cannot discuss it for it is a private matter.
